Patrick Roy vs Ken Dryden

30 January 2007

Last night had the Montreal Canadiens retiring #29, Ken Dryden’s jersey. Throughout the speeches and accolades I kept having one recurring thought..”What if…”

“What if Patrick Roy only played 7 seasons”

Obviously, it’s practically impossible to compare. Roy’s longevity is, in and of itself, impressive. The game, the style and the equipment was different during Roy’s domination. Putting aside the obvious problems when comparing the 2 goalies, I was still curious so I slapped together some info to compare. Below is a comparison of career stats of both Roy and Dryden followed by a chart of their first 7 years in the NHL

Player Patrick Roy Ken Dryden
(1985-2003) (1971-79)
Team Montreal Montreal
Seasons 18 7
Games 1209 397
W-L-T 551-315-131 258-57-74
GAA 2.51 2.24
Shutouts 66 46
All-Star 11 6
Trophies 11 7
Stanley Cups 4 6

Player Patrick Roy Ken Dryden

(1986-1993)* (1971-79)
Team Montreal Montreal
Seasons 7 7
Games 418 397
W-L-T 225-129-48 258-57-74
GAA 2.69 2.24
Shutouts 20 46
* Leaving out Roy’s 1 game (20 mins) in the 84/85
** Dryden played 6 games in 70/71, Roy 47 games in 85/86

Hmmmm, I’ll let the stats speak for themselves but it is an interesting comparison.

There was one other little point, Dryden didn’t play the 73/74 season. Unhappy about the amount he was offered to play, he skipped training camp and held out the entire season before his salary demands were met.

Take care!
