Portable Ice Rink
23 January 2007This has been a rough winter in Quebec. We’ve had unseasonably warm temperatures that have resulted in a lot of my male friends complaining about being unable to make, much less, keep a backyard ice rink.
I ran across an interesting gadget that got a lot of them excited. It’s a product made by Hammacher Schlemmer & Co. Inc. Based in New York, NY, this company makes a portable ice rink for backyards. It comes in 15, 19, 22 and 29 foot sizes and prices range from $199.95 US to $429.95 US. Usable after 3 days of below 0C (32F) it is easy to assemble and requires no tools and is designed to be used on unlevel backyards. Its unique system of locking frame system keeps water inside in case of rain or thaw. It is UV protected, has a vinyl liner that protects the grass underneath and has a patented rigid PVC frame that protects the liner from shovel and skate cuts. Included is an how-to video and a vinyl repair kit. The smaller sized rink is 15′W x 19′ L and weighs only 38 lbs. The largest is 26′ W x 18′ L and weighs 99 lbs. Each size creates a rink with an average thickness of 2.5 inches. Ordering this product will result in customs and duty charges so best make sure you’re informed of the total cost prior to purchasing.
